rocks & fossils

:: my little one's interests lead our way. allowing her opportunities for her own discoveries.

i secretly purchase items from museum shops and on ebay and place them out at special times. they are frequently used in play and they accompany many stories.
natural elements really facilitate our little one's sense of wonder.

soups & stews

:: with the cooler weather comes homemade soups & stews. today, we enjoyed an entire pot of minestrone with pesto. i always like to make a little extra to freeze, but this one was enjoyed throughly. so tonight, after everyone was in bed, i put together all the ingredients for potato and leek soup. little bits of bacon and a dash of cream will make this one savory. the vivid lime green reminds me of spring, but nothing says fall to me like a homemade soup. oh, and apple picking, pumpkin picking, leaf collecting and kite flying. What are your favorite activities in autumn?

painting with water

:: our play stump area. where all the dirt digging, mud making, gardening, bug finding, jumping, playing, gem mining and art happens. The play area with tree stumps was new to our yard this summer and lots of play happened here.

It was great to look back at all the photos and see all the fun we had. It reminds me when I did put together a mosaic of our activities through out the prior year. What activities are you enjoying outside?

going into autumn

:: i love this time of year. with the crisp mornings, the warm sparkling afternoon sun, the soft ruffling sounds of the grasses in the breeze. and as the colors of summer fade, a display of vibrant warm hues comes into play.

:: the hydrangeas brings warm fiery reds to my little ones "rainforest". a beautiful lime green is hiding on the underside of the flowers.

:: "butterfly, butterfly, butterfly" is said with excitement. butterflies were scarce this summer around here. i think we are really able to experience the wonder and beauty of these graceful creatures more than in the years past.

tomorrow is the first day of autumn. i am planning on going up to the farm stand to get some apple cider and indian corn. indian corn is one of the highlight of my little ones daily autumn activities. lots of indian corn love here and here. the corn gets sorted and poured, baked into muffins and stews and some goes for feeding the animals. i also have a sweet little wool indian corn necklace from rosemary for remembrance.

Enjoy your first day of Autumn!

autumn nature table

:: our autumn nature table. i always try and keep a tidy scene, but our autumn table always has a tends to accumulate lots of found treasures as the season swings in. And all those pine cones. We are going to decorate them and gift them for the holidays.

:: a closer look at our treasures from nature. the canning jar holds random things we have found over the years. my little one's favorite is a stem from a pumpkin.

:: we were lucky to pick a few tomatoes. the autumn colors seem so fitting.

discovery museum

:: 360 degrees of the solar system. this is not the solar system, but this is the scene we had before the show started. we were not able to take an pictures during the show. the show was very cool, the images were beautiful and the planets were so close we could have touched them.

:: bones and skeletons have always been of interest with the little one. the kaleidoscope made some interesting patterns with the xrays.

:: excavating dinosaur skeletons and footprints.

:: a few discoveries along the way. those are stick bugs at the top, a diamond back snake on the bottom and a turtle, which we are still trying to identify (pointed nose and long neck, yellowish with spotted black legs. i think it's a soft shelled one of some sort, but i'll have to call the museum, to be sure because his tank was not labeled.)

a raking, soup making butterfly fairy

:: a child's work is a child's play. there was leaf raking, composting, flying, and soup making. anyone for cauliflower soup? all with fairy butterfly wings on. the butterfly wings only come out on occasion, but when they do, there is some kind of special magic fairy butterfly dust that is sprinkled under her wings.
